The Bedford area's location in between Oxford and Cambridge means that the area has a rich array of world-class educational institutions to draw upon. Through Cranfield University and the University of Bedfordshire, the area has built strategic alliances with partners all over the world. In order to respond to the challenges of globalisation and the increasingly borderless nature of education, local partners in the area are committed to creating a Global Campus Corridor in the area, which will provide locations and support for international academic alliances, collaborative research institutes and potentially new satellite campuses of international universities.
There is a clear international flavour that runs through local schools and colleges. Two local schools have successfully introduced the International Baccalaureate and an International Study Centre at Bedford School provides intensive language and study skills preparation for up to 30 students from all over the world. Cranfield School of Management has formal strategic alliances with Darden Graduate School, University of Virginia and the China Europe International Business School, Shanghai; as well as links with many other business schools around the world. University of Bedfordshire has more than 3,000 students from all over the world and is at the forefront of efforts to bridge the digital divide in the emerging economies. The University has signed an agreement with the Nitte Education Trust in Bangalore to deliver postgraduate courses in business and computing.
