Leading sports scientist to speak on creating a healthy workforce

11th Jan 2010

Is your workforce fit?

Leading sports scientist and media commentator Professor John Brewer will be illustrating how a healthy workforce can benefit any organisation at the next Knowledge Network event on 25 February.

In recent years the Government has put a great deal of emphasis on increasing physical activity and exercise amongst the population, but many people struggle to fit in regular and sustained exercise due to busy work schedules and other life commitments.

Research has found that when employers provide schemes or incentives for staff to exercise whilst at work, they are rewarded with lower absenteeism, better staff retention and morale and improved productivity.

This talk will identify the risks of inactivity, the benefits to the employer of a healthier workforce and discuss some schemes which could be introduced to provide opportunities for staff to improve their health and well-being. The principles of health, fitness and well-being in the workplace apply to everyone, whether you work in a large company, or you are a sole trader.

John has achieved a string of high-profile appointments throughout his career, including recently being appointed to the National Olympics Committee 2012 and often appears on television and radio programmes, as well as writing for publications such as Times Online.

His talk will mark the launch of the ‘Changing Lives’ programme of events that the Knowledge Network will be running throughout 2010. The aim of the new programme is to present cutting-edge research to the business community, organisations of all sizes, individuals and the general public.

There will be a wide variety of research topics covered over the programme of events, including computer security and forensics, the latest advances in medical healthcare, climate change and sustainable tourism.

‘Creating a Healthy Workforce: Benefits and Solutions’ will take place at Putteridge Bury Conference Centre from 6pm onwards on 25th February. The cost is £10 (including VAT) and includes wine, finger buffet and networking.
