Bedford as the place for sport and enterprise

17th Mar 2006

The BDA is currently developing an exciting new initiative which it hopes will make Bedford shine brightly as a location for sport and enterprise. Bedford sport and health related businesses, participants in sport, coaches and trainers are invited to email Alison to show their support for the initiative: aslatcher@bedford.gov.uk

The area has a strong sporting heritage in rugby, athletics, rowing and boxing, which famous names such as Paula Radcliffe and Matt Skelton are now synonymous. There are also many excellent sporting facilities including the Bedford International Athletics Stadium. BOOST (the Bedford Olympic Opportunities Steering Team) also plans to develop Bedford into an attractive proposition for visiting 2012 Olympians to use as a training base.
The BDA hopes that funds will soon be available to establish a Centre of Excellence linking sport and enterprise in Bedford that will help create new business ventures, attract visitors and grow the local economy. The proposed Centre of Excellence for Sport will provide state of the art sport and health related services and undertake research into coaching techniques, sport psychology, fitness, nutrition, talent spotting and nurturing, and injury management. Enterprise related activities will be applied to the work done by the Centre in order to produce innovations and commercialise any ideas with potential. Skills and knowledge transfer will also be a key feature in developing local coaching and sporting talent.
