New Jobs Created By Argos Direct
13th Feb 2002
Up to 800 new jobs could be generated in Bedford under plans for Argos Direct, the home shopping division of Argos, to build a distribution centre at Marsh Leys Business Park.
Gazeley Properties, the developer for the business park in Kempston has welcomed the proposal by Argos for the 57,000 sq m (613,563 sq ft) distribution centre – used as a second hub for its successful home shopping division, which has a base in Stafford.
Argos spokeswoman Sheila Williams said: ‘Argos Direct needs a southern hub and Bedford is the ideal site for this centre – it has good motorway links and is easily accessible. We are now hoping that the planning permission will go through and we will generate 800 jobs.’
The planning application has been submitted to Bedford Borough Council with a decision expected in April 2002. A favourable outcome will enable construction to start shortly afterwards, with the new distribution site fully operational from early 2003.
Don Morgan, planning director with Gazeley said: ‘The Marsh Leys development is proving to be very successful. Both Asda, the other business on the site, and Argos have selected Bedford for their new generation of distribution centres because of the improving strategic location of the town. We have been greatly encouraged by the Borough Council’s desire to attract new investment and make suitable sites available. It is our aim to create a development which the town can be proud of’
