Good Progress on Local Jobs
A commercial development currently being built next to Bedford’s Southern Bypass will bring major benefits to the Borough.
The development site, known as Progress Park, will become home to a range of companies. The first to sign up include Healthcare Logistics, the UK’s largest health care products distribution company. Approximately 120 new jobs will be created when their distribution facility opens. A further 26 new jobs will be created by the children’s nursery company Just Learning who are having a nursery built at the site.
As well as the benefit for local employment, the developers of Progress Park have made a financial contribution of £50,000 to improve public transport links to the town centre, and donated £10,000 to Marston Vale Community Forest.
Alan Fall, Managing Director of Healthcare Logistics, believes Bedford has a lot to offer his business. He said, “Bedford has been chosen for the location of a state of the art distribution facility because of its emerging strategic location between the M1 and A1, the improving transport links to major trunk roads and the availability of a quality workforce.
“The facility will cover approximately 114,000 square feet in total and will be the most advanced drug distribution facility in Europe, incorporating the most up to date computer aided distribution techniques. When working at full capacity the facility will employ approximately 120 people across all skill levels.”
Richard Woodall, economic development manager at Bedford Borough Council, thinks the Progress Park development is a sign of growing confidence in the local economy. He said: “Bedford is enjoying a period of sustained development of employment land with new building occurring on Priory Business Park, Progress Park and the new Asda distribution and administration centre at Marsh Leys.”
