Increased CCTV to keep watch of Bedford Town Centre

8th Sep 2009

Five new CCTV cameras have been set up in Bedford Town Centre to help prevent and detect crime, making Bedford a safer community.

The North Beds Community Safety Partnership secured £38,000 earlier this year to fund the cameras, which eliminate black spots around the town centre that became apparent when piecing together the final movements of Robert Gill before his murder in 2007.

The new cameras will complement the existing seven cameras already set up, enabling a near continuous view from one camera to the next.

The new CCTV cameras will become part of the existing network which has helped prevent and detect many crimes over the last few years, reducing overall crime in the town centre by 3%.

The CCTV operators, located in the town centre control room, are an invaluable part of the partnership that helps make Bedford town centre a safe place. Recently one CCTV operator received special recognition for his work in helping to reduce crime.
