Financial Argument Sells Green Policies To Managing Directors
5th Jul 2005
A recent Bedfordshire Green Business Network seminar (in association with NQA) heard Degussa Goldschmidt’s Ratna Morjaria explain that the financial savings that can be achieved by adopting greener business policies are a potent tool when persuading senior managers to accept environmental management. And she should know. Since looking at environmental issues, the company has saved in excess of £24,200 per year. Ratna gave tips to members of Bedfordshire’s business community on how to approach management when trying to gain their buy-in for greener schemes, particularly if they are reluctant at first. She said, “I find that if you approach managers with a sound business case, which shows savings, pay-back periods and other relevant financial information, getting environmental improvements approved is far easier. Sometimes you have to be persistent as well, but it’s worth it to make sure things happen.” The presentation followed a formal session by NQA’s David Winterburn on Management Programmes. He outlined the definition of a management programme, what’s required by the ISO 14001 Standard, objectives and targets, and offered a number of practical hints and tips on how to avoid common pitfalls. This was the fifth environmental management systems session in a series of seminars open to GBN members free of charge. The next session will be held on 20 July at The Forest Centre, Marston Vale, and will concentrate on Staff Awareness and Strategic Support.
