Bedfordbid Gears Up For Launch

31st Aug 2005

Bedford’s Business Improvement District, BedfordBID - the first in the country for a market town - is gearing up to its official launch at the end of September. In March businesses voted to pay an extra BID levy, above business rates, into a fund managed by their own board which will be used exclusively to attract more people into Bedford. Some £450,000 will be collected in the first 12 months - with additional funding coming from other private and public sectors. Retail is the first priority with a major marketing campaign on radio, billboards, bus sides and in the Press. The message will be ‘Come Around to Bedford’ with colourful images illustrating the variety and choice in a real town. On the streets at the same time will be the new Bluecap rangers who will meet and greet visitors and give advice on where to go and shop. Discounted parking is being offered every Friday until the end of year in response to criticism of the high cost of parking at rivals Milton Keynes and other neighbouring towns. Executive Director Mo Aswat said: “Our first target are Bedford’s own people who have forgotten about what a good place the town is. Our second target are those who live farther out and turn their car in the direction of Milton Keynes without thinking they should ‘Come Around to Bedford’. “Our retailers and other businesses, large and small, are putting their own money into making this work. Their customers will get the message everywhere they turn this autumn. We hope their renewed interest in Bedford will add to the improved profile which the town is beginning to enjoy.''
