Bedford Station Quarter Update

25th Oct 2010

Owing to the economic climate and the coalition government’s public spending cuts, a more focused Bedford Station Quarter development will now be taken.

The original planning application entailed council owned land (former Focus store site) for office development and other areas falling within Network Rails ownership which were for a proposed new station, housing to the south of Ford End Road Bridge, office / hotel and multi storey car park on what is the current open surface car park.

The redeveloped train station planning application has been withdrawn and these plans are now on hold until at least 2015 although existing platforms will still be extended early next year; because of this the proposed development on other Network Rail land is also now on hold as the new station was fundamental to the rest of the scheme coming forward.

Bedford Borough Council though are still pushing forward for development on its and is currently reworking the planning application, we still envisage a high end office development with ground floor retail and has various transport activities on this important town centre, transport interchange location.

The town centre exhibition (full details below) is the perfect opportunity to have your say on what you believe would work and would like to see on this ‘station quarter south’ site.
