Making Bedford 'Fit and Healthy for Business'
9th Aug 2006
The BDA played host to Dr Nick Sculthorpe of the University of Bedfordshire (Polhill campus) an expert in 'Assessment of health and fitness'.
Around 20 local health and fitness based business people (large and small companies) enjoyed the lecture which included a tour of the University's brand new and very impressive Biomechanics Laboratories. The economic impact of inactive adults suffering from e.g. back pain or cardiovascular health problems runs into millions for employers, employees and the NHS. It would only take a 9% increase in activity (for those who are completely inactive) to reduce the national health bill by about £90 million as well as save lives!
The sports science laboratory boasted a wealth of high tech equipment including a device which could be used for evaluating golf swings, jumps, tennis swings, the effectiveness of footwear and more. There was also a BODPOD for accurately measuring bodyfat that looked more like an space craft emergency escape unit.
The seminar started at 11.00am with lunch and plenty of 'inspired' networking carrying on well into the afternoon.
If you would like to find out more about this seminar contact Alison email aslatcher@bedford.gov.uk Tel 01234 227416 who can provide the slides and contact details for Dr Nick Sculthorpe. Check out how the University can help your organisation or sports club!
