The Bus Station area has been identified as a key development site as part of the emerging proposals for the re-development and revitalisation of Bedford Town Centre and a critical element of the Town Centre Master Plan. The Council has, following a detailed selection process, appointed St. Modwen Developments Limited as the preferred development partner to take forward a scheme of redevelopment.

A further Town Centre exhibition was held by St Modwen specifically in relation to Bedford Town Centre West. This took place between 9 - 12 February 2005 and attracted approaching 2,500 visitors. It provided an opportunity for the public and other stakeholders (including businesses and residential tenants/owners) to view the display boards outlining the proposed development, St. Modwens vision for the area and what they are hoping to achieve.

At this stage, indicative scheme designs have been formulated and financial and operational viability testing has taken place and submitted to the Council for consideration. A formal Development Agreement was signed by both parties in December 2005 and a planning application is expected in Summer 2006.

Trevor Roff, Head of Economic Development and Regeneration, says: “The redevelopment of the Bus Station area is a key priority for the council. Positive steps are now being taken to move the project forward as part of the commitment to deliver a new and vibrant town centre.”
