Bedford Station Quarter

Using Growth Area Funding, Bedford and Network Rail have commissioned Halcrow planners and engineering consultants, together with DTZ and Urhahn the Dutch urban designers to work up proposals for a comprehensive redevelopment at Bedford Station.

The Town Centre is already attracting major investment and is fast becoming the focus of the Growth Area.

The Masterplan creates a new and quality transportation and office gateway to the town, relocating the station to the southern end of Ashburnham Road and improving its attractiveness and connectivity to the town centre. The scheme will complement major rail improvements scheduled for Bedford as part of the exciting Thameslink Project which will be looking for Department for Transport funding later this year.

The mixed use development is designed to reduce dependency on private cars and promote public transport, as well as providing a first class environment in which to live and work.

An outline planning application was submitted in March 2008. The key components of the scheme are as follows:

  • Demolition of the Focus DIY store to provide a new station and transport interchange at the junction of Ashburnham Road and Midland Road

  • Additional car and cycle parking

  • Transport interchange for buses and taxis

  • Additional retail, hotel and leisure facilities

  • Office development to improve the town's economic competitiveness

  • Residential development including an element of affordable housing

  • Improved highway design to improve capacity

  • Reuse of valuable brownfield land
  • Bedford Borough Council and Network Rail are the principal promoters of the scheme.
